For our friends across the pond, in Oz and Hobbiton, and points in between, today is a special day for us.
For 22 states, including California, it's Super Tuesday!!!
How that came to coincide with Mardi Gras is anyone's guess. lol
Now, I need you to listen very carefully.
Go. Vote. Now.
Of all of the many things we are asked to do, this is the single most important one. This is how we decide on our future, and, for some of us, the future of our children.
I am an African-American woman, married to a Caucasion man, with two bi-racial daughters, one of whom is a lesbian. How many statistical polls did I just crash?
As such, I want the future to be as bright and accepting of them as I can possibly make it. How do I do that? By following the advice of Nelson Mandela: One man, one vote. Change that to woman, and there you have it. By stating my preference, I have done my service to my country.
I'm not always crazy about the people who run it, but, having been to other countries, I'll take this one. It's my home, where I was born. I want it to be the best that it can be, and I want the eyes of the world to see us for what we really are: people, trying to do the best that we can. They don't see us that way right now. But they will, again.
From the far north, my darling
badbadpixie had this to say:
The responsibility part fits for what ever country you live in - but more so for Americans I think since the power your vote has over the rest of the world is very tangible.
I always stress the responsibility of it too. I mean - as long as there are people out there in the world dying to have a chance to vote, how can we in democratic societies throw that away?
To me the act of voting is actually more important than what you vote for. I have thought long and hard about this, and if the choice was for people that didn't have the same values I had was to stay at home come election I wouldn't feel ok with that. I guess it's my innate belief that people for the most part are good, and that the rotten eggs are very few. Too bad that the rotten eggs seems to come out en masse come election... :P
We live in democracies - let's cherish that and step up to the plate when it's asked of us.The coutry of Sweden has spoken. And I couldn't agree with her more.
So, in honor of today, I have some goodies that
callie89 and Pixie gave me. The first is a pic that says it all, from my viewpoint. Pay close attention to the t-shirt.

YOU TELL 'EM, DEB!
And special goodies under the cut!!
( Come see what Pixie made! )
